James Strom Thurmond was the longest-serving U.S. Senator in history, and on December 5, 2002, he became the first to reach the age of 100 while in office.  He retired in January, 2003.

At 9:45 pm on June 26, 2003, Senator Thurmond passed away in Edgefield, South Carolina.  He will be remembered as one of the most accomplished and most respected figures in the history of the state that he served so faithfully.  His presence will be missed.
